The first Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre opened on May 17, 1977 in San Jose, California. Sadly it no longer exists.
The Rock-afire Explosion group came to life in 1980. These animatronics were considered to be a step above those used at Chuck E. Cheese. You can see the band play at Billy Bob's Wonderland in WV.

Yes the clown is a real animatronic. Aaron Fechter made the clown to greet guests at the 1983 IAAPA convention. He's just chillin in the basement of Creative Engineering now... safely tucked away.
THEY ARE DESTROYING THE ANIMATRONICS!!!!! They will be taken out of every restaurant except for one in LA and one in NY. THIS IS AWFUL!!! Thank god for collectors and ex-employees that didn't destroy the wonderful animatronics and merch. Some blame FNAF, but if anything the game brought Chuck E. Cheese more customers. SHAME SHAME SHAME!
